July News -- Nowhere near on time!

Selina Rosen has sold several new short stories this year—six so far—and is working on the re-write of Jabone’s Sword, the sequel to Sword Masters, which Dragon Moon has asked to see.  She and Laura Underwood are back to work on Bad City, the sequel to Bad Lands, too.   It’s been a busy year.

Ken Rand says, “NOW AVAILABLE: Port Chicago Isn't There Anymore--But We Still Call It Home. Read the introduction on my website at www.sfwa.org/members/Rand/. From Media Man! Productions. To find out how to order, contact me at KRand27577@aol.com.”

M.H. Bonham says, “Wolfsong Publications, a small publisher, is publishing a short novel of mine called The King’s Champion.  It’s available through http://www.lulu.com/content/2717838. It’s a Kalena and Romarin story that is set about 50 years before Prophecy of Swords. We have the full timeline of stories in the universe and the links for purchasing said books in this book.  It includes my three Yard Dog Press books and my Dragon Moon Press novel.”

Rhonda Eudaly will be participating in Lazy Dragon Con in McKinney, TX July 18-20, 2008. She regret to inform that Subatomic Books has delayed the release of One Step Beyond which includes her story, "Burnin' Love" until late Summer or early Fall.

Glenn Sixbury will be going to Conestoga in July.

Linda Dunn reports that her daughter's first book will be published by Wiley Press, available to pre-order from all major book stores.  KNOCK DOWN KNITS: 30 Knitting Projects from the Roller Derby, by Joan of Dark a.k.a. Toni Carr.  http://www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0470239549.html  Yes, her daughter is a roller derby skater and was a jammer until a knee injury occurred and she switched to blocking. She skates for the Naptown Roller Girls, a.k.a. The Tornado Sirens. Linda will be competing in the Women's Sabre Veteran 50 event at the USFA Summer Nationals July 8th in San Jose, California.

Robin Wayne Bailey has sold a short story, "The Price of Beauty," to Esther Friesner for an anthology called Witch Way To The Mall, to be published by Baen Books.

We are happy to be able to report that Diana Bailey is recovering steadily from the effects of the stroke she suffered at the end of May.

Melanie Fletcher's short story "Lusts of the Cat Queen: A Dash Manning Adventure" will appear in Helix SF (http://www.helixsf.com) this July.  "Lusts" is an homage to the classic Spaceman Hero SF of the 1950s, with just the tiniest little twist...

Jim Burk reports, “I'm looking forward to Conestoga and telling the tale of how I wound up with the fannish version of the triple crown.  And the new novel is going through final editing before submitting it.”

K. E. Kimbriel plans to be at ArmadilloCon in August

Gloria Oliver's story "Serving the Public" will appear in the Tears of the Phoenix anthology called Ripple Effect. [This is a] charity anthology to support the rebuilding of libraries in Louisiana.

June News -- Almost on time!

Selina Rosen has sold three new short stories this year.  The first of these came out in Haunted Hearths & Saphhic Shades just before Memorial Day weekend.  The anthology, from Lethe Press, consists of lesbian ghost stories, and Selina’s story is “The Dyke You Know.” Here’s a link to check it out.  She also sold a story, “Lost In the Crowd,” to the Dragon*Con Anthology edited by Bill Fawcett, and “Queen of Suburbia” to Esther Friesner’s Witch Way to the Mall.  As soon as she finishes one more run-through, she’s sending the sequel to Sword Masters to Dragon Moon.  Keep you fingers crossed!

Selina will be toastmaster at SoonerCon in Oklahoma City June 6-8.   She will also be attending ApolloCon in Houston, Texas, June 27-29.

Ken Rand says, “My long-awaited western-dark fantasy PAX DAKOTA is now available from Five Star. Order from the publisher at www.gale.com/fivestar or from your favorite internet book dealer. Read the first chapter at www.sfwa.org/members/Rand/.  Favor: will you please ask your local library to order the book? Thanks!”  He also received a “gushingly flattering” review in the May Locus for his short story collection Where Angels Fear (Fairwood Press), which PW had also earlier praised. His Western-fantasy novel Pax Dakota (Five Star) was released in May. And he’s preparing to release his nonfiction history Port Chicago Isn’t Ther eAnymore--But We Still Call It Home in June.

Laura J. Underwood is “experimenting” in selling reprinted material on Lulu.com.  You can find copies of her novellas Gather My Bones and Shadow Hart as well as a collection of new and reprint short fiction titled The Wizard of Mushrooms by going to her store at http://www.lulu.com/keltora.  There is even a free download of Shadow Hart available on the site.  Meanwhile, she would like to point out to fans that there are still plenty of copies of her Yard Dog Press titles, Shadow Lord, Bogie Woods and Other Tales of Conor Manahan, Chronicles of the Last War, Ard Magister and her latest release Lunari Mask (part of Double-Dog #4) available at the Yard Dog Press website (http://www.yarddogpress.com).   And don’t forget to check the Genre Mall for such titles as The Green Women (Sam’s Dot Publishing) and Song of Silver (Dark Regions Press).  She is currently working on putting together a free downloadable sampler of all her novels and novellas to put up on Lulu.   She will be seen at Conestoga in July, DragonCon in August/September and both Archon and Gaylaxicon in October of 2008.

Kathy Turski will be at SoonerCon in June, and will be participating in her first panel discussions and have a reading. She has no idea what she’ll read yet, but if pressed, she’ll bring along a copy of her grandma’s cookie recipe. ‘Everyone loves grandma’s cookies’ she said. Kathy will also be at FenCon in September, with or without cookies. She is still waiting to hear from two magazines which are holding her pieces “under consideration”. While it’s not an outright rejection, Kathy still wishes they’d just talk to her about what they’re really feeling instead of bottling it up inside. Meantime, she is on the caffeine-and-fingernail diet.

Dayton Ward has finally found yet another use for the volumes of useless Star Trek knowledge rattling around in his head. Beginning in June and coinciding with the premiere of Star Trek: The Next Generation on the Sci-Fi Channel, he’ll be providing content for the channel’s website (www.scifi.com) in the form of bi-weekly trivia games. The first quiz goes up on or around June 4th, with new quizzes being posted every two weeks.  Try out your Trekkie Trivia Know-how! Meanwhile, Dayton continues working with his friend and co-writer, Kevin Dilmore, providing content for the bi-monthly Star Trek Magazine as well as working on their next novel.

          K. Hutson Price says, “I’ll be at SoonerCon and ApolloCon in June.  I’ve had two stories recently rejected from Strange Horizons and a novel that’s FINISHED - except for the edits.  Since my last day of school is the first day of SoonerCon, I may be completely frazzled.  Please bear with me until normal (to me) thought patterns return.”

Rhonda Eudaly will be participating in SoonerCon in Oklahoma City, June 6-8, 2008 and ApolloCon in Houston June 27-29, 2008. Her story “Burnin’ Love” should be out in Subatomic Book’s first anthology, ONE STEP BEYOND this June 2008.

James K. Burk says, “Yep, I anticipate being at Soonercon, but not with bells on (kinda the wrong fashion statement for me.)  Still editing my new novel, working title: THE TWELVE.  Got some really great responses to it when I read the first three chapters at ConQuesT.”

“Melanie Fletcher will be attending A-Kon on May 30 - June 1 and Soonercon on June 6-8.  In addition, her new podcast “Don’t Quit Your Day Job” (http://dqydjpodcast.com), with Yard Doggie Jerry Davis, is going great guns.”

Robin Wayne Bailey has sold “The Price of Beauty” to Esther Friesner for an anthology called WITCH WAY TO THE MALL to be published by Baen Books.  His Fafhrd and Grey Mouser novel, SWORDS AGAINST THE SHADOWLAND, will be republished late this year by Dark Horse Books. He’ll be serving as Master of Ceremonies at the Tulsa Trek Expo in June and at the Campbell Conference in Lawrence, KS. in July.

Katharine Eliska Kimbriel is scheduled to attend Soonercon 2008, June 6th through 8th, 2008, Oklahoma City, OK and  Apollocon, June 27th to 29th, 2008 Houston, TX.

Gary Jonas will be at Soonercon in June, Conestoga in July and World Con in August.  The option on his screenplay “Any Last Requests” was just renewed.  He’s finishing up his novel Modern Sorcery and getting ready to tackle another novel as soon as the revision is complete.  His next publication will be in Best of the Bubbas of the Apocalypse.

Bennie Grezlik will be at SoonerCon, June 6-8, and ApolloCon, June 27-29.  As usual, Bennie will write/produce a 30 minute Skip Thruster play for ApolloCon on Saturday night.   Watch for the first novel of Bennie’s SF trilogy, Gate World, to be released by StoneGarden.net July 21.  Bennie’s website is www.benniegrezlik.com.

Julia Mandala sold her story, “Valley Witch” to Witch Way to the Mall, edited by Esther Friesner, and will attend SoonerCon in Oklahoma City and ApolloCon in Houston.

Mel Tatum writes, “Can’t resist sharing this - it’s the news story Arizona posted on their website about my joining their faculty - very cool after an especially difficult week at my current job: http://www.law.arizona.edu/depts/iplp/news/index.cfm?page=news.”  Any of you who know Mel will really appreciate this article. And I think having her in the yard really classes the place up.  OK, maybe not so much.  J

Beverly Hale will be at SoonerCon, Lazy Dragon Con, ApolloCon, Conestoga, Denvention (WorldCon), ArmadilloCon, DragonCon and FenCon.

In case you didn’t notice it in Melanie’s paragraph, Jerry Davis sent this: Yard Doggies Melanie Fletcher and Jerry J. Davis now have a iTunes featured podcast called “Don’t Quit Your Day Job: The Podcast” that you can find either on iTunes or directly from their website:  http://dqydjpodcast.com/
