Affluenza (Or: The Rich Suck)

December 27, 2013

I’ve said it before, and I will say it again, good people don’t get filthy rich. Because you see if a nice guy gets filthy rich he soon finds people who need that money, and causes that he can get behind, and he gives most of it away. After all, just how much does anyone really need? No, the filthy rich are all assholes because what they do is look at all the good that their horde of money could do and instead they buy another car or a house.

The great gaping chasm between the haves and the have-nots was made quite clear a few weeks ago when a wealthy sixteen-year-old boy walked away without so much as a rap on his knuckles after he killed four people while he was driving drunk. The court let him walk away and into a high-end rehab center stating the boy was not to blame for his actions because he suffered from “Affluenza.” In other words, he had grown up so rich and so privileged that he did not understand the difference between right and wrong.

Now this is just the icing on the cake because this whole country has been suffering from the effects of Affluenza ever since George Bush Jr’s first term in office. From the very moment that he granted the superrich a huge tax cut, the economy of this country has gone right to hell because of Affluenza. The members of the House and the Senate suffer from this, too; it’s what makes them vote for us not to have public health care when they all do. It’s what makes them refuse to take away the tax cuts the rich received. It’s what makes them say things like it’s our fault we can’t pay our bills because we’re stupid. It’s what made them give the stimulus packages to big business so they could pay their top executives million-dollar bonuses while every day unemployment grew. Affluenza is why they don’t want to spend the stimulus to make new forms of cleaner fuel, and it’s why for twenty years they said there was no global warming. Why they still won’t pass laws to stop big corporations from polluting our water, our land, and our air. It’s why they think it’s fine to cut benefits to the poor while it would be wrong to tax the rich. They can’t help all their wrong thinking; they suffer from Affluenza. The members of Congress don’t know the difference between right and wrong because they’ve never suffered consequences — because they are rich.

These people — who make decisions (or fail to do so) that affect us daily — have no idea what it’s like to go without health care, or a job. Therefore they don’t have any idea how their actions or inactions affect us. They shut down the government to prove a point; millions of people suffered. It’s not their fault, though. How could they possibly know what those people were going through? After all, they were still getting paid. No one froze their assets.

We need to stop listening to all those idiots over at FOX News and look around, people. The rich have yanked away the rights of the people. While they were getting you to look over there at what the bogey man (big government) was going to do, we gave our country over to big money. Now is it any surprise that they can do something like this? Are we shocked at all that in a country where the congress will do something like shut down to prove a point, that they let the rich buy a judge so that a rich kid can kill four people and serve no time at all?

You know, my son drove his motorcycle drunk and slammed into the open tailgate of a man backing out of his driveway. My son was physically injured, his bike was totaled, nothing happened to the driver or his truck. The cops beat my son up despite the fact that he neither argued nor resisted, thus adding insult to injury. He went to jail for ten days, paid two thousand dollars in fines, and wasn’t allowed to drive for six months. Except for the cops beating him up, I have no trouble with this. He was drunk; he was driving; that’s what he should have gotten. But this poor rich boy killed four people and NOTHING happened to him except that he got sent to a rehab — which is more like a resort. My son was punished for what he did, and this boy is being rewarded. There are two differences here. One is that by the grace of G-d no one was hurt in my son’s accident except him. The other is that — unlike the 16-year-old here — my son paid for his stupidity because he isn’t rich. And neither am I.

Affluenza is all around us. How much more are we going to put up with from the super-rich? Are we going to continue to vote for politicians who have a different set of rights for themselves than they do for us? Are we going to start to hold them accountable? Or as long as they say they are against abortion and gay marriage and big government — even when we should know by now that big government when it comes from their mouths really means they don’t want big business to be regulated at all — are we still going to vote for them? They don’t want big business or the rich to have to live by the same rules we do because they are the rich. Our government is by the rich for the rich. Let’s try to change that.
