Today's Bitch

I Have A Dream, Too

November 18, 2008

I was very happy with our country’s choice for president, and ecstatic that who we voted for finally seemed to count for something.

Suffering through two terms of the guy who stole two elections so that he could destroy our country was quite enough, and I thought McCain would be more of the same. I'm wondering just what has to happen to the economy for the filthy rich to admit they're all greedy bastards and that trickle-down economics and deregulation only really works for them. It was sort of obvious in the debates on the economy that McCain still really believed that the only way to save the economy was to give the rich another huge tax break and deregulate big business still further. That is what put the final nail in his campaign -- not unfair media play, not even Palin -- but being completely out of touch with reality as the rich always are.

Most of the voters don't have the experience McCain had, but we aren't stupid. You can tell us all you want that deregulating big business and giving the rich tax breaks will stimulate the economy, but we all know that the Bush presidency started with huge tax breaks to the rich and getting rid of a bunch of regulation. Now we have the worst economy since the Great Depression. While the rich have gotten richer, the rest of us got screwed. I think what we really saw at the polls was people saying, "I'm tired of rich assholes feeding me a load of crap about how they care about me when they support policies that screw me. Joe The Plumber, my ass!"

We aren't particularly afraid of terrorists, mostly because we know that the Bush administration’s policies didn’t stabilize a damn thing except the Middle East's hatred of us and anything that has to do with us. Bush waved a flag of victory and said, "But there haven't been any more attacks."

All right, but there have been over 4,000 service men and women killed and G-d alone knows how many ruined for life in *their* war. That's nearly twice as many people as died in the 9/11 attacks. What makes service people's lives less valuable than other citizens? I said at the time and I'm saying it again now: go to Afghanistan. Blast the Taliban's asses and keep going till you get Bin Laden. Get out of Iraq, and stay out of Iraq. Don’t you guys realize that the people we threw out of power in Afghanistan are the people we are putting in power in Iraq? Now does that make any sense to anyone? Who was more brutal: the Taliban or Saddam?

We should have done what we needed to do and then come home. Screw stabilizing the area -- that area can NOT be stabilized. Crazy religious zealots who have always fought are fighting over tiny differences in how they think G-d should be worshiped. Use our National Guard to patrol OUR borders and keep terrorists out of OUR country and off our planes and just leave those crazy zealots alone to fight amongst themselves. Send all the troops in Iraq to Afghanistan to finish the job that never got done and then bring them all home. You can't go to another country engage in their civil war and win.

We're concerned about health care because most of us can't afford it.

We're concerned about the economy because we also can't afford to buy food.

We're concerned about climate change because most of us have felt it bite us on the ass at least once in the last few years.

We're concerned about getting our civil rights back because it turns out those are pretty important.

And here's where I get to the bitching part. This election saw a record voter turnout, especially among blacks, which is good because they helped elect a president who at least makes sense when he talks. He's got a long row to hoe. I don't know if he can fix what Bush has done to this country, but I do think he's going to try. I think McCain is a good man, and I think he would have tried too, but the problem is that everything he wanted to do... well, that's what got us in this mess in the first place.

Now you'd think the blacks would know all about what bullshit is spread by the churches to cause hate against people who are different. You'd think they'd be the last people who would want to see other people stripped of their rights and treated like second class citizens. You’d be wrong.

Gays campaigned for Obama. Overwhelmingly, we voted for him -- not just because he believes gays should have equal rights. One party wants to make a constitutional amendment against you, and the other doesn't guess how you vote. Maybe it is short-sighted, one-issue politics, but you just don't vote for people who think you shouldn't have rights. Arkansas voted for McCain, so you expected them to vote in their anti-gay law that bans homosexuals -- and any single person, in fact – from adopting children. But the idiots here didn't bother to think about the implications for them, and it passed by a much larger margin than McCain won the election by. In California, where Obama won by a landslide, Proposition 8 banning gay marriage in the state passed by a huge margin. Why? Because black voters almost across the board in all states where there were anti-gay laws on the ballot proved that they are prejudiced by voting to persecute gay people.

That's lovely isn't it? To wake up in a country where a black man can be voted in as president but where gay people lost all their rights. We've become the new minority that the preachers want to persecute. We are the new target for discrimination, and more and more they are making it legal to abuse us by stating over and over again that it's what the majority wants. Well, guess what: when blacks won their rights, the majority didn't want them to have them either.

I wonder if blacks have just forgotten why they were -- and still are – hated in so much of the country. It's because people said they weren't equal to white people, that they were sick, deranged, more like animals than people. That is was alright for the KKK and such other religious organizations to hunt them down, rape them, abuse them, and kill them, because they were a blight on the earth -- not really people at all.

It was all bullshit, of course. It was just a case of the white people elevating themselves by putting and keeping other people low. Now the blacks who should know better are using the same crap to condemn gays, and to make sure we never have any rights.

Everyone was stunned at this revelation: blacks that ran to the polls and voted for a pro-gay president voted to strip gays of their rights. Why? How could that happen? It didn't make any sense. But it does, don't you see? Because black people are as a group largely fundamentalist Christians and their preachers spew all the same hate from the pulpit concerning gays that most preachers do. They believe that crap probably for the same reason that white people believed all the crap they were told about black people: because it makes them feel good to have someone else to look down on.

Come on everyone -- wake up! Quit being led around by the nose and told what you should believe. Get out in the real world. Meet people -- lots of different people. What you'll find is that everyone is basically the same. We want to love and be loved. We want to have a roof over our heads and food in our bellies and plenty of water to drink. We want to be able to walk down the street, hold our heads up high, and not have to worry that we're going to have the living shit beat out of us or worse just because of who we are.

I have a dream that someday the black man in the White House will give us the equality that we've worked so hard for, and then gay people's children will play with black people's children and none will be afraid.
