Today's Bitch

Plants Will Grow in the Ashes of Civilization

August 12, 2013

Since the beginning of the genre, spec-fic writers have speculated about what would bring abound the end of the human race—or at the very least what would bring the planet down to a skeleton crew. Zombies are a popular theme now, nuclear war was popular in the 60s, robots, super computers, cannibalistic aliens from distant planets, magnetic pulses, asteroids, I’ve used climate change myself—the list goes on and on. It’s only now I know what will truly be the down fall of the human race.

That’s right. We can’t strain pasta without scalding ourselves and spilling it in the sink. We are incapable of cleaning our ears without running a Q-tip all the way into our cerebral cortex. We can’t figure out how to fold our clothes or cook an egg without a fancy gizmo that costs only $19.95.

We’ve all seen these commercials—the ones that make us say, “Really? Is anyone that fucking stupid?” But wait! There’s more! Because the people who invented that shit and the company that makes them are getting rich selling their products to people who really must be just that incompetent.

Let’s face it. A lot of us really are amazingly stupid. We must be, or some of the stuff that happens here on this planet simply would never happen. Poor and lower-middle-class people keep voting for politicians who make their lives increasingly hard because they believe them when they say that taxing the rich would cripple the economy. Of course, giving the rich a huge tax cut… well I’m pretty sure that’s what crippled the economy in the first place.

We deregulated big business because that was supposed to be good for the economy, but somehow it wasn’t at all. Instead we now have huge corporate monopolies so strong that they can do whatever they want from over-charging us for utilities to polluting the air we breathe and the water we drink. And now the earth we stand on isn’t even safe because they’re going to frack the shit out of the planet til the whole place is a sink hole for gas. All so that we can drive to places we don’t really need to go and buy things we don’t really need—which should stimulate our economy but really only makes sure that some kid in India can make enough money for clean water and just makes the fat cats still fatter.

And instead of calling them what they are—greedy rich bastards—let’s call them the “job makers”. That’s right; they are our benefactors. Without them we have nothing except… wait! Before mega corporations moved in and took over everything, everyone had a job. Why is that? Because small business people don’t out source. Small business people don’t buy multimillion dollar machines to do the job six people did or price their stuff below cost til they put everyone else out of business and then jack their prices up to make up the difference and then some because… Hey! No competition.

Before Wal-Mart put everyone else out of business there were literally dozens of privately-owned stores and shops that employed many more people than that Wal-Mart store does. The people that worked at those small stores made decent money and had pride in their jobs, and the people who owned those businesses loved them. Now every old downtown area in the South looks like a ghost town. Wal-Mart moved the center of Van Buran, Arkansas. Not once but twice—leaving two gaping holes of ghetto.

People are constantly screaming about not wanting big government yet seem to be completely unaware that the country has been taken over by a far more evil dictator—big business. And if you think they don’t want to own everything just to be the only one left standing, let me tell you that in the last ten years corporations have approached me three times to buy Yard Dog Press.

Now why do you think they want Yard Dog Press? I’ve never even been able to pay myself a salary. The press mostly runs in the red. I’m not even in competition with any of the publishing houses they already own, so why? Because that is the face of greed—to want it all whether it actually benefits them or not. They just want it all.

Why? Because when they have everything they can do whatever they want to us. When they are the only “job makers,” then we are their slaves. And that’s the ultimate power trip: to own people, to have complete control over other people.

When BP damaged the ecosystem of the entire gulf coast they put thousands of people out of work. But don’t worry, all those people who owned their own fishing boats, hotels and restaurants—BP took care of them. They gave them jobs. That’s right. They now patrol the beaches of the gulf shore with nets and buckets picking up tar balls. Isn’t that the same as owning your own business?

On the surface it does seem like we really are a nation of people too stupid to strain pasta or clean our ears without doing bodily harm to ourselves. But while we may not show our brain power with our votes or purchasing power, I have a lot of hope that the human race will turn this crap around yet. I believe this for a very simple reason.

Vegetable gardens. We have been all over the country this year to shows and visiting family. In our area and everywhere else we went we saw gardens. There were gardens on the balconies of apartment buildings, on postage-stamp-sized city lots, in backyards, and on porches. Everywhere we have gone this year, everywhere you look, people are growing at least part of their own food. A few years ago—even around here—no one was growing anything. Garden plots had been allowed to grow over with grass and garden fences had been ripped down. Now ground is being broken that has never been broken and new fences are going up.

And there are water catch barrels everywhere to water those gardens with rain water.

To me this says people have found a way to tell the corporations to fuck off. Every tomato that is plucked is one that wasn’t grown on a corporate farm or trucked with a gas-guzzling corporate truck. Every carrot, every beet, every head of lettuce, thumbs its nose at a system that wants to make us 100% dependent on them. Every spring of basil grown in a pot in an apartment window says, “Hey you don’t own me yet.”

The truth is the further we get from the land the more we are dependent on “the man” for our existence. The closer we get to the earth, the more we do to protect and keep her, the less dependent we are on the forces that be, the more the earth cradles us and keeps us.

A lot of people believe the end is nigh. This is their excuse to do nothing at all to protect the planet. They will happily leave a dirty, filthy hole for the people of the future because after all Jesus is going to take them home any day now, or the zombies, or liberals are going to come and try to take our guns. They will die, the earth will go on, and they will be responsible for making life harder for all of those who come after them.
